Who Owns You Online?

At 7:13 a.m., a young woman takes a selfie before leaving home.

She adjusts her hair, smiles at the camera and uploads the picture to an app that promises to turn her face into a movie character.

She does not think about where the photograph will go next.

A few minutes later, a businessman asks an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant to help him write an email. To make the task easier, he grants the application access to his microphone.

Elsewhere, a mother receives a voice note warning that a dangerous disease is spreading through her community. She forwards it to her family WhatsApp group.

Another Nigerian, rushing to download a new app, reaches the same screen millions of people have encountered before. “I Agree.”

He clicks. He does not read the 3,000 words of legal language beneath it. None of these people believes they have done anything extraordinary. They are simply living ordinary digital lives.

But behind those ordinary moments, something else is happening. Data is being generated. Faces are being captured. Voices are being recorded. Locations are being logged. Preferences are being studied.

Behaviour is being mapped. Relationships, interests and habits are being converted into information that machines can process.

The transaction is almost invisible. There is no cash register. No receipt. No warning bell. Just a click. And yet, something of yours may have changed hands.

For years, the internet was sold to us as a place where technology would make life easier.

Search faster. Communicate instantly. Work remotely. Find information. Edit photographs. Meet people. Create content.

But the bargain was never as simple as it appeared. The digital world does not merely respond to what we do. It learns from what we do. And AI is making that learning more powerful than ever.

A photograph is no longer simply a photograph. A voice is no longer simply a voice. A location is no longer simply a location. Together, they can become fragments of a digital identity, one that can be analysed, predicted, reproduced and, in the wrong hands, exploited.

That is where the story becomes uncomfortable. Because the question is no longer whether technology is changing our lives. It is whether, in giving technology so much access to our lives, we have also surrendered control over parts of ourselves.

  • Who owns the photograph you uploaded?
  • Who controls the voice you recorded?
  • Who decides what happens to the information your devices collect?
  • Who benefits when your behaviour becomes data?

And when an AI system knows your face, your voice, your habits and your preferences, how much of “you” still belongs exclusively to you?

The future is often described as something approaching. For millions of people, however, that future has already arrived. It is sitting in their phones. Listening through their microphones. Learning from their clicks. Watching what they share. And quietly building a digital version of who they are.

This is the new battle over identity, and most people do not even know they are already inside it.

The Price of “Free”

The digital world has trained us to expect convenience at little or no financial cost.

Photo-editing applications are free. AI tools offer free access. Social media platforms cost nothing to join. Entertainment services invite us to create accounts within seconds. Productivity applications promise to make our lives easier.

But “free” does not always mean costless.

Many digital services operate within an economy in which data is enormously valuable. Every online search, location check-in, voice command, uploaded photograph, browsing habit and digital interaction can contribute to a profile capable of revealing who we are, what we like, what we fear and how we behave.

That information can help companies improve their products and personalise services. But it can also become a valuable commercial asset in the expanding AI data marketplace.

The uncomfortable truth is that people frequently surrender significant amounts of personal information without fully understanding the permissions they are granting.

How many users carefully read the terms and conditions before clicking “Accept”?

How many understand how long their information will be stored, who can access it, whether it can be shared with third parties, or how it might be used in developing future AI systems?

Most people choose convenience over caution. And that has created what can only be described as a culture of “Digital Surrender,”a situation in which privacy is treated as an inconvenience rather than a fundamental right.

Consent Is More Than Clicking “Agree”

One of the most important concepts being redefined by the digital age is consent.

Traditionally, consent implies understanding and voluntary agreement. But digital consent often involves navigating pages of complex legal language written primarily to protect organisations rather than educate ordinary users.

A user may grant an application access to contacts, cameras, photographs, location services, microphones and device storage without stopping to ask a simple question: Why does this application need all of this? That question matters.

Children and teenagers may be particularly vulnerable because they are among the most active users of digital platforms while often having limited understanding of the long-term consequences of sharing personal information.

Genuine digital consent should therefore mean more than clicking a button.

People should know:

  • What data is being collected.
  • Why it is being collected.
  • How it will be used.
  • Who will receive it.
  • How long it will be retained.
  • And how consent can be withdrawn.

Innovation may be moving at breakneck speed, but human understanding is struggling to keep pace. That gap is dangerous.

The next generation of technology should therefore be judged not only by what it can do, but by the guardrails built around what it should not do.

The objective should be simple: people must retain meaningful ownership and control over their identities in an increasingly automated world.

When Lies Travel Faster Than Facts

Technology has democratised information. Anyone with a smartphone can now publish something capable of reaching thousands or even millions of people.

This has strengthened citizen journalism, amplified marginalised voices and expanded public participation. But the same technology has also created an environment in which falsehood can travel at extraordinary speed.

False health advice. Manipulated videos. Fabricated statistics. Misleading headlines. Emotionally charged rumours. They circulate every day.

Often, people do not share false information because they deliberately want to deceive others. They share it because they trust the person who sent it. That is where the problem becomes particularly dangerous. Fear, outrage and urgency can overpower verification.

AI has made this challenge even more complicated. Sophisticated tools can now generate convincing articles, images, videos and voice recordings capable of blurring the distinction between what is authentic and what is manufactured.

Deepfakes are no longer simply technological curiosities. They can damage reputations, manipulate public opinion and facilitate fraud.

Imagine receiving a voice note from a loved one asking for urgent financial assistance. The voice sounds right. The mannerisms sound right. The urgency feels real. But the person never made the call.

Or imagine watching a video of a public figure making inflammatory statements, only to discover later that the video was fabricated.

In an environment where seeing is no longer sufficient evidence of truth, critical thinking is becoming a survival skill.

Before sharing information, we should ask:

  • Who created this?
  • What evidence supports it?
  • Can it be independently verified through credible sources?
  • Does the content appear designed to provoke an emotional reaction before we have time to think?

These questions may seem simple. They are increasingly essential. “Verify before you trust” should become a default setting for digital life.

That small pause between receiving information and sharing it could prevent the spread of harmful falsehoods, protect reputations and stop manipulation from becoming mass reality.

The Ethical Questions AI Cannot Answer for Us

AI offers extraordinary possibilities. It can support healthcare workers, assist teachers, improve accessibility for people with disabilities and enhance productivity across industries.

But capability is not the same thing as responsibility. The fact that an AI system can perform a task does not automatically mean that it should. That distinction raises difficult questions.

  • Who is accountable when an AI system produces a harmful outcome?
  • How do we prevent algorithmic bias from disadvantaging certain groups?
  • Should creators be compensated when their work is used to train AI models?
  • What safeguards should exist against surveillance and abuse?
  • How transparent should organisations be about their use of AI?

These questions are not confined to technology conferences or academic institutions. They affect ordinary citizens seeking employment, accessing financial services, receiving healthcare or consuming news.

As AI becomes embedded in everyday life, ethical frameworks must evolve alongside technological innovation. The goal should not be to reject technological advancement. It should be to ensure that human dignity, fairness and accountability remain at the centre of it.

Technology should serve humanity. Humanity should never become subordinate to technology. And perhaps this is where the AI debate becomes more profound.

When machines can generate content cheaply and rapidly, what becomes more valuable is not merely the ability to produce information but the ability to exercise judgement.

  • Deep intuition.
  • Lived experience.
  • Empathy.
  • Moral reasoning.
  • Original thought.

These are qualities that machines can imitate, but they do not emerge from algorithms in the same way they emerge from human consciousness and lived experience. Our humanity may therefore remain our greatest competitive advantage.

Cybersecurity Is the Invisible Frontline

For many people, cybersecurity sounds technical and distant. It belongs, they assume, to programmers, banks, governments and large corporations. It does not. Cybersecurity begins at home.

Every internet user is a potential target. Cybercriminals exploit curiosity, trust and urgency. They send messages claiming that an account has been compromised. They impersonate banks, employers and delivery companies. They create fake investment opportunities promising unrealistic returns.

Increasingly, AI can make these attacks more convincing and personalised. A weak password reused across several accounts can expose multiple aspects of a person’s digital life. An unsecured device connected to public Wi-Fi can create opportunities for sensitive information to be compromised.

A single careless click can produce consequences that are anything but small. Yet protecting ourselves does not necessarily require advanced technical expertise.

Some basic habits can significantly reduce risk:

  • Use strong, unique passwords.
  • Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible.
  • Keep devices and applications updated.
  • Independently verify suspicious requests.
  • Avoid unfamiliar links and attachments.
  • Back up important information.
  • Review privacy settings regularly.

These are not merely technical precautions. They are habits of responsible digital citizenship. Cybersecurity is no longer optional because digital life itself is no longer optional.

Building Digitally Resilient Communities

Individual responsibility cannot carry the entire burden. We cannot tell ordinary people to “be careful online” while leaving them to navigate increasingly complex technologies without adequate education, transparency or protection.

  • Parents need guidance on protecting children online.
  • Teachers need resources to teach media and digital literacy.
  • Journalists need stronger verification practices and the ability to explain emerging technologies in language ordinary people can understand.
  • Religious institutions, community organisations and workplaces can also play a role by incorporating digital awareness into their programmes.
  • Governments have responsibilities too.
  • Technology policy must protect citizens’ rights without unnecessarily stifling innovation.
  • Technology companies must improve transparency and accountability.

Digital literacy should be treated not as an optional skill but as essential public education. A digitally resilient society is not one in which people are afraid of technology. It is one in which people understand it well enough to use it without surrendering their judgement.

The Future Is Already Here

The future is not approaching. It is already here. AI will become more sophisticated. Digital interactions will become more immersive. The amount of information competing for our attention will continue to grow.

The question is not whether society can stop these changes. We cannot. The more important question is whether we can adapt wisely.

  • Will convenience continue to outweigh caution?
  • Will speed continue to triumph over truth?
  • Will innovation proceed without sufficient accountability?

Or will we build a society of informed digital citizens capable of protecting their privacy, questioning what they see and demanding ethical standards from the institutions and technologies they depend on?

The answers will not be determined by engineers and technology companies alone. They will be shaped by ordinary people.

  • By the teenager deciding whether to upload a photograph.
  • By the parent deciding whether to forward a frightening voice note.
  • By the journalist deciding whether to publish an unverified claim.
  • By the worker deciding whether to give an unfamiliar application access to a microphone.
  • By the citizen deciding whether to click “Agree” without asking what they are agreeing to.

Every click is a choice. Every share is a responsibility. Every permission granted is an act of trust. And perhaps the most important question we should be asking in this new digital age is not simply, ‘What can technology do to us?’

It is, ‘Who owns us online?’

Because in an age defined by data, algorithms and constant connectivity, digital awareness is no longer a luxury reserved for technology experts. It is a life skill.

And learning how to protect our identity, question what we see, understand what we surrender and demand accountability from those who build the systems around us may be one of the most important forms of literacy of our time.
